Destruction of the national flag

Destruction of the national flag

When the Finnish flag has served its purpose— for example, when its white part has yellowed and the blue has faded or it can no longer be maintained in good condition, it should be disposed of in a manner worthy of a national flag. You can dispose of the flag by burning it or cutting it into small pieces and discarding the pieces in several batches with regular household waste. The most important thing is that the flag cannot be identified from the pieces, and that it cannot be sewn back together. The flag must not be buried in the ground or at sea.

For a retired Finnish flag, no new uses should be invented, as the national flag is a solemn interpreter of our patriotic sentiments. Finns have always treated their flag with deep respect, and this tradition should be preserved.
